Punching w/ last 3 knuckles

Is punching with the last 3 knuckles really the best way? I think so because your wrist isn’t bent so you’re less likely to sprain it. Also, you have a little more surface area so you’re that much less likely to break a knuckle. -Rob LaPointe

OK, I stumbled across this the other day and thought this was interesting. I get the surface area argument, I guess, but I'm not usually concerned about surface area when I punch. I'm not sure I get the wrist sprain argument, though. I would think that part of punching efficiently means that your wrist is straight all the time. Is that what he's saying? Also, most knuckle/finger injuries due to punching happen on the last 2 kunckles most often (at least in my personal experience). Any thoughts?

I find this very strange. My training has always delt with using just the first two knuckles only. Small surface area and very strong.

Knuckle push ups are done on only them in my style. I've been in probably at least 1000 matches/training sessions fights, and never hurt my wrist.

Interested to know others thoughts.

Very informative Marchere, thanx! I guess the key (to not injuring yourself) is keeping your wrist straight, no matter how you punch.
