Last Modified at Fri Mar 5 14:44:43 2004 by Tye Botting IP66.157.161.19 Here's the flyer for the campout:

http://www.kungfu.cc/campflyer04.doc

Everyone that are students of TKF are welcome, as well as friends of our school and their students (e.g. Kyoshi Montoya and his students, instructors from Wang's Martial Arts and various of their serious and advanced students, the folks from MAAC, etc - ask me if you're unsure).

The only stipulation is that the campout is for high-school age or higher; basically adults only - this will be a serious, hardworking training camp, with significant contact and physical effort.

Enjoy!

Reply #1 Posted at Wed Mar 3 17:54:35 2004 IP165.91.177.45 I am so psyched about the camp! This is 2.5 days of pure kung fu ecstasy. Between night training, chin na, getting tossed around like a hacky sack, and great comraderie...you just can't go wrong.

Reply #2 Posted at Fri Mar 5 14:33:32 2004 IP204.196.55.102 Regarding the campout and training, I am putting the final touches on planning all the sessions out and was wondering if anyone had any preferences.

So, what kinds of things would everyone like addressed at the camp (beyond the normal trail-specific training)?

[I'd like to hear from most everyone that's going, so please chime in with something (or things!)]

Reply #3 Posted at Mon Mar 8 19:54:39 2004 IP165.91.177.45 I would definitely like to see another "Dance of Pain"! I think that everyone enjoys learning chin na and its flow.

Another session of material that is optional would be great also(Sifu Paulson's session at the last camp on Hung Gar techniques).

Last suggestion: Technique and Range - ie the elbow is a powerful weapon, when one is inside the normal punching range or using the body to strike(Lien Chou Chuan). too often it seems there is a focus on punching and kicking with students, and a lack of realization that the distance you are from the opponent has a profound effect on the technique you choose.

I'm thinking of a kung fu weapons form I haven't taught anyone there before...

Reply #7 Posted at Fri Mar 19 15:47:08 2004 IP130.160.200.178 weapons you haven't taught anyone...hmmm..kwan dao, tonfas, spear, (btw, I missed out on previous knife and staff forms, so those are good for me!)

knife and stick tactics were always enjoyable. Also, I second the motion for close striking techniques, i.e. elbows, knees, etc. Learning hung ga from Sifu Paulson was really neat. I hope he does that again. Also, some more mainstream mantis things would be really beneficial to all of us, though I'm sure you'll have to convince everyone else to be excited about that! wink Do we have any camper Sifus with Japanese MA training (juijitsu, aikido, hapkido, judo maybe)? I think that would be a geat experience to all of us with only Chinese MA experience. Oh, one more thing, MORE TAI CHI!!! More tai chi movements, applications, excercises, MORE, MORE, MORE!!tongue

BTW, I changed the password of your old account to the first four letters of your last name plus the first two of your first name. If you don't login to it and cahnge it, I'll just go ahead and delete that account - you've got more posts in this account anyway now. Don't forget to pick an avatar and a screen name...

Reply #10 Posted at Mon Apr 19 13:12:55 2004 IP204.196.55.102 Just a reminder about what to bring to the campout:

a place to sleep (tent, car, whatever)
clothes you can train in and don't mind getting dirty
food or money to eat food
the ability to fall (at least somewhat - you'll get plenty of practice at the camp!)
a gung-ho attitude to get the most out of the camp and enjoy it to its fullest

Also, please make sure you stop by the front gate and get a parking pass for the campground for the weekend if you're bringing a vehicle.

go on FM-149 (nice road!) until you get to FM-1375
Turn LEFT on FM-1375
go until you cross I-45 and get into New Waverly
road T's at a restaurant
Turn LEFT
go for about a block
Turn RIGHT on FM-150
go until you almost get to Coldspring, TX
(if you get to Coldspring, just turn around)
Turn RIGHT onto FM-2025
go "about" a mile
Turn LEFT into Double Lake Campground Area
stop at the Ranger Box and get a parking permit
Turn LEFT at first fork in road
go to the end of that road (there will be a field)
Park and get out of your vehicular transport mechanism (VTM)
Group Campsite F will be through the forest to your RIGHT

From US-59:

Reply #17 Posted at Fri Apr 23 14:46:54 2004 IP65.0.42.38 If anyone needs it, I'll be bringing one spare tent that sleeps 2 and one spare single-person tent. Just FYI.

Weather forecast says rain, but we have a covered area, even with electrical outlets, so don't worry - we'll have plenty to do.

Reply #18 Posted at Mon Apr 26 13:51:36 2004 IP204.196.55.102 Well, the Training Campout was a great success! I'm pretty sure everyone involved had a blast and got lots out of the event. We covered knife defenses and a nice knife drill from Modern Arnis, 6 techniques for the ambush Trail walk, guest instruction in sparring entries and tactics and unconventional weapons, another guest instruction in applied techniques as well as 2-man drills, Trail technique head-to-head competition, qigong and taijiquan, and applications for "Mantis catches the cicada"

The overall results and awards for the weekend were as follows:

Red Team won the nighttime Trail event.

Jackie won the "Stance-Off"
Aaron won the Red Team MVP
Rick won the Blue Team MVP
Kai won the "Green Eggs and Slam" Award
Njekwa won Most Improved, with Ramah honorable mention

Thanks everyone for putting so much into the camp and making it yet another very successful and enjoyable camp. You all did great and showed a ton of heart throughout all the training and weather. Looking forward to the next one!

Perhaps it should be next Fall?

Thanks for taking the time to organize this Tye. I know we all appreciate your effort and hard work. I had a great time crossing hands with everyone and look forward to doing it again soon...fall sounds great! I hope I'm still around... cheesy

Reply #20 Posted at Tue Apr 27 04:48:40 2004 IP130.160.200.178 The camp was awesome! It was the exact kind of mental break I needed from evrything here in 'Bama. It was sooo what I needed to get motivated again. Besides just teaching techniques, the guest instructors gave me a lot to think about. Especially Dr. Hume's portrayal of those stupid chemistry dorks! If I ever see one, they're dead!!mouthshut

It was great seeing everyone again from TKF, and meeting some old AND new TKFers. Chris and Dan, you guys are always getting better and better it seems like. Keep it up! The rain and mud added that extra "toughing it out" feeling so that was cool. Also, I kept my tent from leaking so I stayed civil throughout the weekend.

It s*cks that you weren't feeling well, Sifu, and I think if we had given you chocolate friday night instead of sunday morning, you would have had an easier time. I noticed a difference on sunday!wink

Sifu Stanton has also mailed me some pictures, and I'll try to figure some way to put them up as well. The only thing is you can't see the full effect of the mud and wet in those pix! wink

I'm looking at Fall dates again for Campsite F.
